Fashion Snob…

Family Affair

Image

Sometimes I think I am a fashion snob. I was born with fashion inside me. I do not know how to live without fashion. When some one asks me who I dress for, I always say me. I do not know who else I would dress for, although I had a small dent in my youth when I wanted to be like everyone, but that lasted only a year.

Image

Fashion is such a personal expression. You carve your voice with fashion, find a place with fashion, and explore the world through fashion. I was reading an article about 90’s fashion. I guess it’s a new movement in fashion. The article glamourized the days of 90’s fashion, pre-internet media, although technology was a subject, it had not taken over.

Image

The article spoke to how fashion seemed more of an insider event. The outside world didn’t care what was going on in fashion. The crowd was more elite and selective. For a moment, I romanticized that moment in fashion while reading the article. I thought about my first time at NYFW in 2010. I was so excited and full of anticipation. I did feel a lot of people flocked to the venue to get photographed, and inside I felt like there were a lot of sencesters, not fashion followers. Yet what is a true fashion follower?

Image

I am a fashion follower because I went to school to study design, or because I read every book, magazine and article pertaining to fashion? My pal for fashion week loved clothes, but had no clue who anyone was. I would point out all these amazing editors and reporter, but he only cared about which celebrity was front row. I was sad, but we both still enjoyed the event.

Image

Reading the article I wished to be one of those people in 90’s fashion era watching supermodels walk the runway and knowing all their names, editors scrambling to write articles to meet daily press deadlines, and a cast of socialites front row. The article poo-pooed all the new media blast from every angle. And I thought for a moment, I am a fashion snob?

Image

I love that I can see fashion on every level; runway to street. I think most fashion followers today do not know the past or history of every house. They do not know how to describe clothes, only to say “it’s cool.” The vocabulary of fashion has changed, both good and bad, but fashion is about change. Chanel stopped designing when she felt that there was no long anything new to say. Than she came back with the “Town Suit,” revolutionizing fashion. I think she would be proud to see fashion and media blend today.

Image

With S/S 15 collections underway, I picked some of my favourite street-snaps of todays fashion moments. This is the power of fashion today. I can sit and observe what is happening in the world from my new shop in Vancouver Atelier3, and still enjoy what is happening around the world. Do I still hit the shows, of course, who would pass up the chance to see walking art. The “cool” thing now is that walking art is on every corner!

Raw Edges: Baiyu

BAIYU @ VDS

When you get to an after party, you only have one thing on your mind. Whose wearing what! Well, maybe only me. Victor dE Souza (VDS) had a wonderful after party during NYFW Fall 2012, and he is the man who dresses major singing sensations like Rihanna, Gaga, and Cyndi Lauper, so when I spotted Baiyu, I shouldn’t have been shocked.

I noticed this fashion savvy singer front row during the VDS show. Her style was eclectic and luxurious, “girl, I see your Chanel bag.” Her fur hat was fitting for the cold NY air, but her personality was all sunshine. Check out our Muse Closet interview with Baiyu, to hear how this lovely song bird describes her style.

When Baiyu told me she was a singer, I was curious to know her musical style. I admit, l’ve grown up listening to Asian pop music, so my mind was racing to see if this girl was on my iTunes playlist–I was wrong. This American Asian signer sent me her track, and I almost fainted–girl has soul.

Her music, like her personality, is electric. Her smooth alluring voice reminds me of great R&B divas. Her singing chops are authentic and original, like her style. I am now obsessed with her, and her music is on my iTunes in full rotation. Check out her videos and music for yourself. (Baiyu: YouTube Channel)

To know me, is to know I love a good scarf. I love wrapping myself in its warmth, and fashionable look it gives all my outfits. In my post with designer, Jason Matlo, we discussed how a scarf can up make any outfit look sharp, even sweatpants.

However, I did not know I could take my fashionable scarf look from fall into spring, and make it look sharp and sexy. One collection that I loved during NYFW Fall 2012, was Brandon Sun. They had great fur pieces that enveloped the models like hot melted butter. I highlighted some of their Fall 2012 looks in my NYFW post, “The Scene.”

The Spring scarf is normally very flimsy, and I always feel like a fake poet when I wear them, so I usually dash scarf season out the window with snow. Yet, I am always cold during Spring. I don’t know about your city, but Vancouver nights, during spring and summer are chilly. When I travel to warmer cities, I find myself in a constant hot and cold state, hot outside and freezing inside, with air-con blasted everywhere. Having a scarf just makes things so much better, and I have a great pillow during popcorn summer blockbuster season.

Brandon Sun showed me that I don’t have to give up my luxury scarf this Spring. I can still be fabulously drenched in comfort around my neck, and not just jewelry. Brandon Sun‘s Spring collection had some great scarfs to keep you looking alluring with your T-shirts and shorts this spring and summer season. I love the idea of mixing seasons, and Brandon Sun had given us a great way to try this look out for Spring–bing on the chilly nights!!

With my past four years stuck in University, I have been out of the fashion loop. With months to go in my degree, I have been thinking about my future. I still love fashion, and I wanted to get back to my first love, hence my blog. This year at NYFW, I feel in love with some amazing people, and I am embarrassed to say I didn’t know whom everyone was sitting in front row, or the people rushing around Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Venue. I still took snap shots because I felt the presence of their greatness, so I wasn’t a complete moron. Research is a University student’s best friend—I do not my want parent’s money go to waste. Therefore, like any good student I hit the books—well, web.

First unknown, known, found at The Standard Hotel, a must see venue in the Meat Packing District, yes where Samantha got her groove on. I was covering an accessory presentation, but being my fifth day into fashion week, and my sixth show of the day, and two more to go, needless to say, I was exhausted. I entered the venue and I got straight to work, taking pictures and gathering material for my blog. My wonderful partner in crime, Nima, who handled all the video production, kept me in line with interviewing designers and crowd goers when I was too tired to care. Unfortunately, he was just as tired, as I was, by this point, and we didn’t want to wait in the long media line for a designer interview. We did collect some amazing shots and video of the collection, as we packed up our things, I spotted this amazing woman on my way out—I had to stop. I told Nima, “Grab the video camera we have to interview this amazing women;” I needed to know everything about her. I approached her and asked her for an interview, and in a Southern twang, she declined, claiming her mouth always gets her in trouble. I asked her for a quick snap shot, and she was more than accommodating. I took my shot, but I was not happy with my photo, and I didn’t want to bug her for another, so I didn’t use her photo in my original street fashion post—glad I didn’t. With a bit of hunting I found out that this amazing women, Kate Lanphear is the style director for Elle USA. My snapshot does not do her justice, but you can check out some of the amazing blogs dedicated to her style: http://fearlanphear.blogspot.com/

My next unknown, known, was found lounging at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week venue. Resting with her friend, this tulle drenched style maven, commented that she loved sitting around, as passerby’s complimented her all day, I could see why, her style is flawless. This fashionista, Lynn Yeager, is contributing fashion editor at Vogue and The New York Times.

My last unknown, known, flabbergasted me. Normally I am not shy to ask for photos, but he was one of the most amazing men I had seen in a long time. I had one of those moments where you know you’ve seen someone before, but you’re not sure where. This striking man, who is a model, was on almost every street style blog I looked at, Shaun Ross is amazing. His sweetheart personality made him even more beautiful in person. Even with my bad photography skills his angelic personality shines. He has done a video with Katy Perry and modeled for every “it” designer.
